Vino 100

I've been meaning to blog about a charming wine store I stumbled upon the other day. Vino 100, located quite conveniently inside the Hollywood and Highland complex, has a simple concept: 100 different wines, all under $25. This is hard to do well. Owners Katia and Jason Schwartz stock a variety of hand-selected wines, many of which I'd never seen or heard of. Each wine is accompanied by a Vino 100 Wine Barometer, which rates each wine on a sliding scale not by points, but by flavor and body. Here's the image from the Vino 100 Web site:

I'm never a big fan of numerical ratings, so this scale appeals to me, but it's also useful for newcomers to wine. Vino 100 also has an attached patio with a bar, which they use for daily wine tastings and semimonthly special events, like the upcoming Women and Wine wine tasting, which is complete with mini massages from Aveda and chocolate samples. Between their business hours of 10 am and 10 pm—Vino 100 closes at 7 pm on Sundays—visitors can order a wine tasting flight. $10 per person gets you a sampling of five wines. Another $10 adds on a cheese plate that serves two.

The staff is incredibly friendly, and they know their juice. The store also has cute wine accessories and glassware—everything you need to host a tasting of your own. They ascribe to the same theory I do, that wine should be fun and unintimidating. The Schwartzes seem to intentionally stock wines you've never heard of, just so they can turn you on to a new vineyard. It's definitely good fun.
