Java Jones - Santa Barbara

This is Java Jones, a small coffee shop on State Street, Santa Barbara's main drag. Java Jones opens promptly at 7am, and its long wooden banquettes and painted tile tables inside are a great place to people-watch when it's cold out, like it was the morning I visited. Java Jones features organic coffee, a large selection of looseleaf teas, and a pretty standout kitchen with a small breakfast menu.

Of the coffee drinks, the Hershey Kiss features coffee, steamed milk and chocolate; its white-chocolate counterpart, the Edina, is equally rich and satisfying. Both give an ample dosage of coffee to get the day started right. Croissants are especially buttery and flaky. My favorite from the Java Jones kitchen, however, was the Lox Bagel, which combined cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, red onion, capers and lemon in a delicious rendition of the standard dish.

On my second visit, a particularly vocal fisherman, enjoying his second—or tenth—cup of joe advertised to everyone walking by that Java Jones was the place for the best cup of coffee in town, pointing wildly inside while hovering near the front door. So locals apparently are hooked. And so am I.
